Dachshunds are small dogs, but they do not fit like other small breeds. Their long backs need more usable length, especially in the car, where a tight seat can make them curl up awkwardly during the ride.
An extra-long center console dog car seat gives dachshunds a compact place to rest while staying close to you between the front seats. The key is choosing a seat with enough length for your dog to lie flatter, plus raised sides that help create a secure, cozy space.
Why regular small dog car seats can feel too short
Many standard console seats are designed for compact breeds that sit curled up. Dachshunds often need more room from chest to hips. A longer seat helps them settle naturally instead of constantly adjusting position.
What size should dachshund owners check?
Measure your dog’s back length and compare it with the seat’s interior length. For this extra-long dachshund center console dog car seat, the full size is 52 cm / 20.5 in long, 27 cm / 10.6 in wide, and 25 cm / 9.8 in high. It suits small dogs up to 18 lb / 8.2 kg.
Console fit matters too
Before buying, measure your car’s center armrest. The armrest box should be at least 26 cm / 10.2 in long, with at least 19 cm / 7.5 in between the front seats. Split-lid armrests also need a small gap for the securing straps.
Look for comfort and safety features
Raised sides, soft filling, washable materials, and two safety tether clips all make a difference. Always attach tethers to a harness, not a collar, and make sure your dog is within the recommended size range.
For dachshund owners who want a compact travel seat that saves passenger space, an extra-long center console dog car seat can be a practical everyday upgrade.
